Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker is a four story tower house or keep picturesquely set on a small rocky islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses surviving in western Scotland.
The name 'Stalker' comes from the Scottish Gaelic word 'Stalcaire', meaning 'hunter' or 'falconer' and is believed to have been originally the site of a 'Fortalice', a small fortified building, belonging to the MacDougalls when they were Lords of Lorn, and built around 1320.
The castle itself was built around 1540 by Duncan Stewart of Appin and the rocky islet it sits on is known as the 'Rock of the Cormorants', which is also the battle cry of the Stewarts.
It was eventually abandoned around 1780 and lost its roof shortly before 1831. In the late 1960s, it was restored from its ruinous state by the late Lt. Col. Stewart Allward whose family still owns the castle.
