View from Iona

Iona is a small island located off the Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Its Gaelic name is Ì Chaluim Cille (Saint Columba's Island), or sometimes just Ì or Idhe.
The island is popular for its tranquility and natural beauty, but also as a place of pilgrimage. Iona Abbey, found by St. Columba in AD563, is located on the island and has an important place in the history of Christianity in Scotland.
Despite attacks by the Vikings in 795, 802, 806 and 825, during which many monks were killed, Christianity clung on here. Iona also remained the burial place of successive Scottish Kings until Macbeth, who died in 1057.
