Kilree Round Tower
The Round Tower at Kilree is located not far from the village of Kells, Co. Kilkenny. It lies at the back of a fairly heavily wooded cemetery, bisected by the wall that separates the the complex from surrounding open fields.
The capless and battlemented tower is about 29m high and has a round-headed doorway that is relatively low to the present ground level. The doorway faces the ruin of an early church with pronounced antae at the west end. However, there is nothing to indicate that a monastery once stood here.
In a neighbouring field, to the west of the church, is a sandstone High Cross which is almost three meters in height. It is believed to be from the 9th century and while badly weathered, it is still possible to see the beautiful carvings. It has five bosses on the west face and one boss on the east face. The cross is covered with spirals and other ornamentation and there is some figure carving but it is quite faint.
